Sookie Stackhouse Series

I am obsessed with the Sookie Stackhouse Series, thanks to my best friend Jennifer.

The books are entertaining full of comedy, suspense, romance, fantasy and vampires (of course the current fad of our time right now). I definitely wasn't trying to get pulled into the teenage vampire world, I am 30 for heaven's sake! ha. However, these books are definitely for the adults and when you are unemployed and have a little too much free time, anything entertaining is easily captivating. Needless to say, I'm obsessed and am currently on the seventh book of the series.

To summarize, the books are about a cocktail waitress from a small-town in Louisiana, who keeps to herself and doesn't date much because of her "disability" to read minds. When she meets Bill, Sookie can't hear a word he's thinking. He's the type of guy she's waited for all of her life, but he has a disability, too--he's a vampire with a bad reputation.

Of course, I don't want to give away all the fun, but in each book, there are new twist and turns in the plot, more fantasy, new creatures (werewolves, shape-shifters, fairies, witches, etc), new love interest, more vampires, more murders and Sookie just can't seem to keep herself out of trouble or harms way. Especially with her telepathic ability, which the vampires are so intrigued with.

I must admit that each book has it's ups and downs, sometimes the the writing is poorly written and a bit repetitive in content, but overall they're a quick fun read and I look forward to picking up the next in the series.

Now, after reading these books, I turned to the HBO series, "True Blood" which was created based on the books. I love the books so much that I'm completely disappointed by the differences in the TV show. They've altered the characters and have introduced completely false story lines. It makes for interesting TV and great character build up, but I can't help compare and say that is't the way it actually happened. A bit frustrating on my part. The best part about reading is you get to visualize they way each character looks. Another disappointment to me about the tv show... Tara is actually a Caucasian girl in the book and I imagined Sookie to be much prettier, however, I am slowly warming up to her and oh Eric...ugh. I imagined him much hotter!! I'm okay with Bill and I'm sure I'll get over my disappointment soon enough! ha. I'll continue to watch the HBO series for the pure entertainment that the show brings, but I will have to try really hard to appreciate the show for what it is and love the books even more!
